Also, if you install this style: be sure to set your default (e.g. ugly) gmail style to compact mode first, otherwise this style will still appear to add lots of unused space, while in fact it's still the gmail default style doing that.
I couldn't find a way to fix keyboard input using CSS alone, so I wrote a userscript: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/131814.
Update: google seems to go into counter attack by putting fixed heights as element styles. I wrote a http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/135141 that tells google to go to hell, and removes these enforced element style heights.

This style is only tested by me on Chrome/Chromium, so, on FF, your mileage may vary.
