This is a solution to an extremely specific problem. Each mail sent to the largest official all-student mailing list of a certain university contains a table with one column and two rows. The first row contains an image banner, and the second contains the email body. The width of both table cells is set to 50px, so until the banner loads the body text is displayed as a thin vertical stripe. I divide blame equally between the mailing list for its bizarre formatting and GMail for making it impossible to display HTML mail in plain text by default. This style removes the width, as well as the fugly HTML table border.
